I love Barbara Kruger's little spin on Rene Descartes famous words, "Cogito, ergo sum", which translates to, "I think, therefore I am". Her conceptual artwork from the 80s has a juxtaposition of imagery and text - and both are deeply weighed down with the power of sexism (this being a prominent theme throughout her work). She said that "I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are and who we aren’t." Her work ended up becoming a highly visual form of communication.
The style of her work obviously had a consumer effect as well...
